Ratings are a part of chess.

Why do sports teams keep score? Why not just play the game?

I think all tournaments ,ladders and clan games are rated.
I doubt if I could find enough opponents to play all unrated.
Sports teams are a totally different animal.
For one thing,they will have supporters who like to see them win.
But you do have a point.
I just become weary with all the posts about ratings and sandbagging.
Numerous tweaks over the years have been applied but evidence shows you can never please everyone or stop people manipulating the system

He is rated 300 points above his opponents because he beats them enough to raise his rating. If he did not beat them, his rating would be lower.

The higher your rating gets, the more you end up playing people who are rated lower than you are. Ask Carlsen- he is rated higher than ALL of his opponents. It would be questionable to suggest his rating is false as a result.

When I hit 2000, my opponents average rating will also be 2000.

Maybe he likes to play lots of games at once. If so, the opponents won't all be 2000s because there aren't enough of them to do that.

Some people like to play a few tougher games; some like volume so there are always moves waiting when they have a bit of time to kill. To each his own.
