I have been experimentig with 1 e6 as an opening for Black. Can anyone tell me what system or opening this is, I'd like to research it some more.

Wouldn't White object to Black moving first like that? Either way, it definitely has surprise value, but you'd need to be bigger than the other guy.

Right, my mistake. That would be novel though, huh? Rather innovative

I know there are many excellent players here who use the French successfully, but as a mediocre player I find it very difficult to get any purchase out of it - I have an orthodox and conventional dislike of destabilizing moves designed to generate initiative, and I find it particularly frustrating when I'm forced to play f6 to challenge White's central control.

The french defence is a good opening, and is particularly good against unprepared opponents. I reccomend you research the winawer variation and the advance variation of this french defence. The winawer is quite common and the lines in it are usually worth studying.

Thanks for the info, I have had some sucess lately with it and I'd like to use it more. More research will give me the necessary confidence.

I played the Sicilian religiously for 25 years. I also play 1.e4 as white. I lost against the French so often, I had to start playing it. I rarely play the Sicilian now.

Excellent choice.
As an e4 player, e6 is a most hated defense. When confronted with it, my usual response is to resign the game, kick the chessboard over and stomp out of the tournament!

That would have been my recommendation, but I didn't believe anyone would consider me serious.😀😀

Good enough reason to get mad: Game 1234518

Its a deep-strategic opening. Thats why I like it!

As someone who plays 1.e4, I too can tell you the the French pisses me off to an extreme degree(the only opening that gets to me more is the Caro-Kann) It is very solid, and accepts a blocked Queen's Bishop as the result. It's good, and that's why I hate it so....

As black, I use the Petrov almost exclusively. I find it works for my purposes.

How about this as a response to the French? 2)c4 which i believe is the Steiner variation.. now if black plays 2)...d5 they will come out unfavourably from the exchange..Game 1516085
Unfortunately if the opponent realises that they may play something else, leaving you with a poor position.
