I know there are many excellent players here who use the French successfully, but as a mediocre player I find it very difficult to get any purchase out of it - I have an orthodox and conventional dislike of destabilizing moves designed to generate initiative, and I find it particularly frustrating when I'm forced to play f6 to challenge White's central control.

I have been experimentig with 1 e6 as an opening for Black. Can anyone tell me what system or opening this is, I'd like to research it some more.

As an e4 player, e6 is a most hated defense. When confronted with it, my usual response is to resign the game, kick the chessboard over and stomp out of the tournament!

How about this as a response to the French? 2)c4 which i believe is the Steiner variation.. now if black plays 2)...d5 they will come out unfavourably from the exchange..Game 1516085
