So I checkmate this guy and he claims a draw, which I think is bs. Is this allowed?
After the game he sent me a message:
"Subject: A Draw!
I was goin for a draw!"
I know it isn't really a big deal, but I spent 5 hours playing this guy tonight and I think I deserve what I worked for.

Sorry, but what you have there is stalemate. Which is a draw.

You had an easy win.
Get rid of all the other pieces and practice mating with (in increasing level of difficulty)
K&2R v K
K&Q v K
K&R v K
K&2B v K
K&B&N v K
Make sure you can do all these blindfolded.
If you can't ask me, I will set up a set piece game and show you.

I don't think it's worth learning KBN vs K until much later, it hardly ever happens and is quite difficult to learn. Spending some time on king and pawn endings will give much better payback for the effort given.
I deliberately left off pawns but, of course, understanding opposition and how to queen pawns is equally important. I had a (rushed) game that I wasn't taking seriously some time back against a 1400 player and suddenly I was seriously down in a lost position and had to give up a N & P just to stay alive. He eventually exchanged down (unforced) to a K B (wrong colour) & RP vs my sole K (in front of his pawn) and he did not believe until he got the P to the 7th that he could not queen it. (Had he known that he got have had a NP instead in what was then a won position) so knowing what wins and what doesn't is important but being able to force the basic mates first is more important.
