White resigned in this position after finding no way to stop Rc1+.

Was this wise?

Yup, famous chess position. I use it as one of my tactic puzzles in my collection of 1000. Nice work.

This is a great example of what I call an "interference" move.

Can also be called a "monkey wrench" move. ;-)

Hmmm. Cultural gap here? "Throwing a monkey wrench (i.e., a spanner for you Brits) into the machinery" is a well-known expression. At least, I thought it was. ;-)

Indeed, White missed the opportunity to turn the game around with 1. Rd6.

After 1...cxd6, 2. f7 wins.

Or after 1...Rxd6, 2. g8=Q also wins.

Yep. Just need to read Edward Abby's The Monkey Wrench Gang. Some in that group measures distance by six-packs, too.

Yes, white really throws a spanner in the works with that one. *looks around*

Deserves to be in every chess glossary: spanner in Britain, monkey-wrench in the rest of the English speaking world.

Ahem. Spanner in quite a few OTHER bits of the English speaking world, I think you will find.

okay, maybe we can even say spanner in Amerika, after all Edward Abby has inspired terrorists like the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Earth First!
