Yes, 1. Re8+ would probably be better because

1. Re8+ Rxe8 (or Qxe8)
2. Ra8+ Kxa8
3. Qa1+ Kb8
4. Qa7+ Kc8
5. Qa8#

Wrong. Ra8+ is the way. You almost had it.

1. Re8+ Qxe8
2. Ra8+ Kxa8
3. Qa1+ Kb8
4. Qa7+ Kc8
5. Qa8+ Kd7

Edited to change 5...Kc7 to Kd7 as above.

Ra7 for the first move? If so.
1. Ra7 Kc8
2. Ra1 Kd8 (the king has escaped)
3. Ra8+ Nc8
