The 2008/9 ECF grading list is now on line at the ECF website and I see that there is talk of a "perceived deflation" in the list.

Does anyone know what that is about and whether when the updated grades that are to be published in august, to be used next season, will mean the revised formula for estimating a FIDE grade (ECFx5 + 1250) will have to change again?

After my first season I'm ECF 83.
    83x5+1250 = Elo 1665

That would compare with my results online here.
I can't help thinking that it is rather inflated though to be honest. After a solid start to the season I lost my way & pretty much anyone who turned up could beat me.

I think I am around 1550 Elo OTB so roughly ECFx5+1150 = 1565 would be a better formula.

I plan to break ECF 100 this season though 🙂

On my club website it says:
"The provisional grades for next season are being published in two formats, old-style and new style. This is in order to correct a perceived undergrading of lower graded players. The old-style grade will be your official grade for next season to be used in grading limited competitions etc. The new style grade will be used to calculate your grade for the 2009-10 season."

My ECF 83 is my old grade, but the new one is ECF 102

I have fulfilled my prediction & have broken ECF 100 without playing a game.
    Yay!

    Long discussion about it here.

    :-(

Ah well, at least I've manged to halt 3 or 4 consecutive seasons of decline.

What would be the disadvantages of ditching the ECF system for FIDE Elo?

Thanks, I am now more or less up to date!

But, if the current system has faults in it that have lead to this deflation over time does that not mean that this will have to be done again in 10 or 15 years if we are staying with the same non elo system?

Edit: Whoops, my mistake I thought this was the private OTB forum.

The only disadvantage would be that English players would have to get used to the new numbers and what they mean. Not much of a disadvantage really, and the advantages would be numerous.

As expected my grading has reversed its long decline and improved to 1940 from only 16 rated games.

At the moment I am confident that this trend should continue in the next list and with just a small amount of effort my ECF grade will be back above 150.

My ECF grade stayed the same at 173 (approx. 2100 FIDE), which means it has been exactly the same since 1994! However, for some reason they have updated my 1994 grade so that it is now listed as 170.

Just to show that there is little correlation between players ratings on this site and their official ones - one of the top players on this site, with a rating in excess of 2400, has an official FIDE rating which is likely to fall below 2000 after two dismal tournament performances.

138 from 127 (old grades) under the new grading scheme you are now ECF 158 I think 🙂
Fat lady's new grade will only be a couple of points higher because s(he) is a girlie swat.

I guess I need to play more rated games next season as despite over 3 years of study and all the time spent on RHP - my grade is still two points lower than when I started: - 68....you start of with 70 by default.
