No matter how you look at it, chess will never be cool. In America, chess carries with it all the social status of bird watchers. Chess players are generally looked upon as nerdy, acne faced geeks that play a game designed for Communists. While this is often far from the truth, chessplayers will always play the game because they find it interesting...not because it's popular. 😏
Who cares about being cool. So we're not cool. Cool people drool, nerds rule! Losing to a girls like aquatabby did is no shame as long as she was geekier than you gave her credit for.

I had a couple of clients who were trekkies, a mother-son team. They were really into it. The boy played chess credibly for a little kid who had just learned the moves a week before. They were very happy and a joy to deal with and most definitely geeks.

You're reading it so you must be a nerd. I know you're geeky too. I am also convinced you drool. Yet I think you think you're cool.

Bird-watching is very popular in America. As for social status, I don't know. But more and more Americans are buying horribly expensive binoculars.

Bird-watching isn't cool? Take it up with this blogger: http://www.coolbirdwatching.com/
