In Bobby Fischer's defense, He was really given the shaft by our government. He was an embassador of chess, and our government made a criminal out of him simply for playing the game he loved. If I was as good a player as he, I would have played that the same way. In fact, I would have let them take me home in chains...Can you imagine the public outcry? Arresting someone for playing a chess game? Get real. He should have made himself a martyr. As it is, he runs and hides as if he really was a criminal...which is bad.

The man has had over a decade to get good and pissed. Honestly, I am not terribly concerned about his opinion of 9-11. I don't see him out joining the Taliban or Al-Qaida either, so who really cares.

He was made a criminal for breaking the law. Do you think people should get preferential treatment?

Whatever, pal. When laws are stupid...hell yes. I am not an advocate of widespread civil disobedience, but when you are right, the public will know it. This was a travesty...If he was there selling weapons or aiding one of the parties in the civil war, that would be one thing. The guy played chess. And he got paid hansomely. Thats all.

I would like to see the UN kiss my sanctioned rear end. When its a country like the Sudan or Iraq, where are they? Sitting on their hands on the sidelines talking, thats where. Its my feeling that as a free man you should be able to enter any country you wish to as long as you are a welcome guest.

This has nothing to do with the UN.
These were US sanctions against Yugoslavia, not UN sanctions (which is why Spassky wasn't breaking any laws).
Its US federal law he's in breach of.
Arguably, what he did was give credibility to Milosevic's regine, which could be seen as just as bad as gun-running.

Fischer always loved making the position worse before fixing it...

If Fisher gets arrested for playing chess in Yoguslavia, then Bush and Cheeny should be arrested for trading oil with Iraq around the same years with Halliburton (a much more serious crime IMHO). If Fisher is guilty, then so is Cheeny and Bush, so what is it USA evil neo cons?!

That is nothing. The UN Oil for Food program is a far worse case of corruption. Nothing against you, mateulose. I am sure you are a swell guy and all, but it very amusing that the liberal knows the precise spelling of Halliburton but butchers Yugoslavia. I hate to say it, but this topic probably should be moved to the debates forum...because I am sure most folks would grow tired of the firestorm this topic is likely to generate now that Bobby Fischer's name has brought out the Halliburton-Bush/Cheney hating stuff...though I am not quite sure how its relevant under this topic.

Basicly Fisher and Bush/Cheeny have done the same "crime", ie: trading with a boycotted country.

Perhaps you should check the facts. George H.W. Bush had issued an executive order to enforce a UN embargo. It was the UN that passed the sanctions on the Balkans in the first place,

The whole thing sounds like a dictatorship or the New World Order to me. Something, maybe I 'm not sure exactly what, but I definitely smell a fish, and it doesn't smell fresh to me.

" Bad Bobby! Bad Bobby for playing chess!! How dare you defy my order to not play?"
The whole thing turns my stomach. And that is true, even though I don't see eye to eye with Fisher's political views. It's STILL wrong.

*"Basicly Fisher and Bush/Cheeny have done the same "crime", ie: trading with a boycotted country."

If this is true, than Bush and Cheeny should be prosecuted too. That doesn't mean Fischer's not a criminal.

It's not about playing chess. It's about supporting the economy of a nation we've declared economic war against. Now whether that economic war is just or not is a different question.
