This brings up a question for me. Ive just started playing otb, what happens in a rated game if ive advanced my pawn to the end and i have both my rooks and queen still on the board, what would be used as my second queen?

I don't know if there are any rules about moving pieces of your colour which your opponent kindly has put on the board for you... But I doubt it's legal to promote your pawn to your opponent's queen. I wonder if one could construct a position in which this would actually be desirable.
Under normal rules, White has virtually no chance to win. However, allow promotion to an enemy piece, and White wins by 1.bxa8=Black Queen!! (or Black Bishop) 1...Qxc6 2.Ne3 and there is no way to stop Nc2#.

yes but I think the lead up to this position means that the opponent helped/blundered badly, what he meant was that mate can't be forced
1.h3!! ... 6.h8N!! ... 9.Nxb5 Qa2 10.Nd6 Qa1 11.Nxc4 Qa2 12.Na5 Qa1 13.Nxb3#

In the middle of a game, my opponent got his pawn to my side of the board bottom when he would normally redeem his pawn for a queen if I had taken it, but he still had his queen so he got another one. I didn't know that was permissible! Is it in fact accepted in the rules of chess that you can have 2 queens of the same color on the board at once?
Edit: I had this come up in OTB play once against my grandfather--through very bad play on both sides we ended up with both of us having multiple queens in a game which was still hotly contested. Does anyone have any examples of contested games with extra queens on the board in their games here at RHP?

Please try to follow along with the discussion. The question was not whether it was legal, but desirable.
Edit: Just read your profile why is being non subsciber something to be proud of? I am certainly not saying that it is something to hide or be ashamed of, but to be proud of it, why? please enlighten me. I can understand someone saying they are proud to subscribe to (and financially support) the site, but to be proud to be a non subscriber just does not make sense.

And why didn't you word it something like, "I checked the rules and they state that you must promote to a piece of your own color"? If I didn't know better, I'd think you were just trying to make a snarky comment in response to my post.

If you want to discuss the sub/non-sub issue, please open a new thread. It's too off-topic for this one.
Here's a game with 5 queens on the board at the same time. However, it was contrived by Alekhine, although he duped many people into thinking it actually existed by putting it in his "best games" collection.

There are many theoretically sound games with 4 queens.
Originally posted by EliGraceandDadAs many queens as you have pawns. All the pawns can become Queens, rooks, bishops, knights.... all of them! They are all foot soldiers, and they deserve promotion just like any military guy who does his full 20 years service. Man, you might need Lev Albert's Comprehensive Chess Course Series Volumes I & II! 🙂

Originally posted by Sicilian SmaugCoke cap would work! Or you could buy a set like I have with two Queens in case of promotion. Hey, one time I used a walnut shell. Now, that was one tasty Queen! But, I'm glad I have a tournament set and clock with a spare Queen in case of two queen promotion. 🙂 Hey, I hear one of those monoply set cars from MONOPOLY works well for a second Queen. Then, you can feel like your driving your Queen in a cadalac. BAHAHAHAHAHAH!
