If you know what side your opponent has castled, how do you know when to castle on the opposet side or the same side? Generally what Ive been doing is castling same side if Im behind in development, and castling opposet if Im ahead. Is there anything wrong with this notion? Why does Spassky castle opposet at move 13 when it looks like hes behind in development?

When the match is heading towards an endgame (both queens are off here) it makes more sense to castle queenside in general, because your king is closer to the centre where he will be needed.

But in general both players would have castled before the queens were burnt off. I like to castle on the opposite side to my opponent so i can pawn storm the mother πŸ˜€ Where it is safe of course. Not if he has packed all his pieces on one side of the board.
Castling? Something new in chess?

The problem with that is, is that is doesnt always work, b/c both of you are going to do a pawn storm, and alot of times its a matter of who gets there first, my question is asking when and when not to do it. Thanks Sicilian and Luke for answering my question πŸ™‚

I try to avoid castling too early. By about move 17 or so, it should be clear which direction a player should castle. I love it when I castle on move 25, and my opponent resigns on move 28. πŸ˜‰

Castle on the side which is safer for your king. If the position is not lively, then you could castle opposite and stir things up if you want.

Study the position and ask yourself, where do you want you king to be?

Capablanca, once castled 0-0-0 which look ridiculus to everyone but himself. He knew his opponent would create a passed pawn, X moves down the road and so his king would be closer to stop it. But if he had castled 0-0 then he would have lost.

Brillant, absolutely brillant!
