Originally posted by paulbuchmanfromficsI agree, Paul. NIC is indeed geared towards the professional chess player. IMO, it's the very best publication out there. Of course you don't have to be a titled master to benefit from the wonderful exclusive interviews and super GM annotated game coverage.
I have one Informant and one New In Chess Yearbook. 🙂 Although they are great books, I really didn't feel like they were for me. In my opinion, they are more geared at the professional who must keep up with the modern trend. I have one New In Chess Magazine (sampler). It is very nice and includes a tribute to Tony Miles (around the time of ...[text shortened]... power chess king (although some of its annotations became useless after a certain point.) 🙂
Did you see the games of the Shirov - Kramnik match? Shiriov won the match in convincing fashion, and was the legitimate contender to play Kasparov for the world championship but negotiations fell apart due to sponsorship (and perhaps other) issues. You probably already know about that but I thought I'd mention it just in case.
Ever see the film: "The Great Chess Movie"?
Anyway, nice collection of chess material you have. I'm envious.
I have a modest 20 or so chess books, but I'm a regular subscriber to NIC (just the mags). I'm currently delving through Kaspy's MGP series. It's taking me awhile because I'm following all of Kaspy's analysis in the games.
I cut of my Chess Life subscription and quit keeping up with serious chess around the time of the Kasparov-Kramnik match on the internet. (They posted the games live with analysis.) I don't know what has happened since then. I saw Anand is the World Champion, and that was a real shocker to me. He was Kasparov's chew toy when I quit keeping up with it. 🙂

You might want to go over the games again, perhaps with the assistance of someone who actually knows something about chess.

Anand was ranked in the top 3, and often #2, for many years. He has scored ahead of Kasparov in tournaments on numerous occasions
Originally posted by MindWarsThe Anand games that I had seen in print up to that point weren't very impressive.

There was the famous Evans Gambit thrashing and that match. I didn't have access to many of his great wins at that time.
Before the Kasparov-Kramnik match, I hadn't really heard of Kramnik either. I'm more into books than modern practice. They weren't even playing when the books I was reading were published.
In the chess circles, I was in. People said I want to play like Kasparov. Nobody thought about Anand, at least where I came from.

Who you heard of or didn't hear of is moot. People in your "chess circles" say they want to play like Kasparov because it's a common public name. Even most non chess players are familiar with the name Kasparov. It's not exactly a commentary about the level of chess that guys like Anand, Kramnik, Leko, Shirov, Morosevich, etc play because you and those in your "chess circle" aren't familiar with them.
Originally posted by paulbuchmanfromficsbut I heared them saying(recently): play like a GM, play like an engine(Fritz or Rybka), play like Topalov!

I never said I understood what was going on in those games. Kasparov beat Anand in the match. I only went by results and that's why I thought Kasparov was vastly superior (around 1995).

There is a reason Kasparov is/was the "name brand" so to speak. He was almost unbeatable for the longest time. He walked circles around those guys for years. I haven't made a comment about the skills of any of those players you named. I just said there was a time when no one considered Anand that much of a threat to the title, around the time of his loss to Kasparov.
Here's the stat from chessgames.com.
Overall record: Garry Kasparov beat Viswanathan Anand 23 to 8, with 38 draws.*
Now that's a chew toy. 🙂

I'd put cash (in escrow), that I could do much worse than that margin to you! What would that make you? Something that would aspire to being a "chew toy"?[/b]

I just don't want to fight with someone who seems to exist only to do just that. Maybe you just do this on chess sites, maybe not. If you live your real life this way, you need to get some help as soon as you can. You will never live a life of love and happiness with that attitude. It will only bring you down and make you a bitter, unhappy person.
Is that your way of backing down? You sure do seem to have a large collection of "exit speeches" You should get into politics, lol!
That's for your own good. Think about it. What good would it do me if you became a better person? None
I DON'T WANT TO ARGUE WITH YOU.

You're obviously the guy who needs some psychiatric counselling, which is why you brought the subject up. You need to go and look up the word PROJECTION. You're totally crying out for help here.
I have two words for you paul......GROW UP!
Stop being an incessant, whining little ninny!
