You and I both know why people keep calling you Jason.

However, I am apparently the only one who knows who the idiot is in this conversation.

Wow...I feel like a cheapskate! I own 12 chess books. The complete 5 vol. ECO set, a few Informants, 1 endgames book, and a couple of openings books.
😀

Just did a quick count but gave up at 200.

2nd collection had over 400-500 but sold them all bar 10 in the early 90's.

Now when I see them in junk shops I just buy them - compulsion.
Have studied and read in full about 15 chess books in 30 years.
Most of them in the first 3 - 4 years.

I have thousands - yes thousands of various chess magazines.

I also have 32 full size chess sets (including two giant garden sets),
18 pocket sets. 5/6 electronic chess computers bought for a few
quid a various car boot sales.

Chess ashtrays, ties, socks, shirts, hats, mugs, pens, slipper
(should be slippers but dog chewed one - to pieces!!)

shields, trophy's (over 30 of those), cufflinks. aftershave bottles
shaped like chess pieces.....

I even buy 2nd hand books if the have a chess mentioned in the
title or a chess piece on the cover.... I'm a NUT.

oh my.. well, ok 🙂

how do you have the time for all of that, I mean becoming a lawyer etc (according to your profile) ? 50+ books should mean something like, I don't know, like 500+ hours? and besides, all that tactical training? it makes me dizzy 🙂

if you don't wish to answer this, nevermind.

Hi Korch

Which book would you say did you the most good?
Which one inspired you.

I`ve started to read chess books when I was 10 😉

I would say that 50+ books in 16 years is not so much.

Nimzovich books in Russian ("My system", "My system in practice" ) learned me to play positionally. Books about Latvian (first one was "Latvian gambit. Made easy" by Grivainis & Elburg, second one "The Latvian gambit" by Kosten) gambit helped me to improve my tactical sight. Another very useful book for my tactic was "Attack" (in Russian) by Tal & Damsky.

Actually, it's pretty obvious who the idiot here is, Larry. You've just made 2 posts in this thread that are intended to provoke an argument and have ABSOLUTELY ZERO to do with the thread topic. That is the DEFINITION of an idiot.

Considering your rather mediocre level of chess, I'd spend less time starting arguments and more time learning how to play this game, if I were you.

Was the My System in English?

I hated that book. It was like reading treacle. The newer transaltion
is a superb book. Came out 25 years too late for me.

I played the Latvian for about 3 years before I read any book on it.
(Then it was quite a shock to see all these sharp lines I had been
playing were actually proved to be bad). I never played 3...Qf6
against 2.Nxe5 at all.

There was a magazine devoted entirely to Lavtian Gambits (when
I took it up it was called the Greco Counter Gambit).

Vukovics Art of Attack and the Alekhine's Best Games Books
did it for me.

Have German IM friend who said English trans was terrible.

Yet I know British players who swear by it - gosh how strong would they
have been had a better translation came out.

Am enjoying new translation but only dip in every now and then.
