I don't think the game of chess is an art, but what people make of it and do with it.
The game of chess itself is just a game, held together by rules, but because it's such a complicated game, some people can study it all their lives to try to beat another person who's studied it all his life as well, and make some money over it.

On Dragon Fire's post:
The fact that I'm even in doubt if she would be or not, is already a bad thing.

I've heard that chess is a battle and go is war.

That's from go players, of course.

How would you describe chess? I would label it:

"A really interesting, sadistic little game"

Would any other lables fit? )🙂
A game with 32 pieces, 16 for each side, in which the goal is to checkmate the opponent's King using various tactics and strategies

Bobby Fischer told Boy Scouts chess is like boxing, it's knowing how to punch and when to duck.

Battle or war, grandmasters like Reti, Saidy, and Kotov have defined chess as a contest between two ideas.

Chess - As best as I may see

An illustration, a shifting representation of logic, guiding the principles
of a pair of grande designs. Where the imbalance of human
philosophical predilection erodes logic's hold on, equilibrium.

For me chess has always been the game in which your intention should be to win your opponent.
