There is Atomic Chess where all the adjacent pieces - but not the adjacent pawns - explode when you capture something. There is no check in the traditional sense; just the threat of explosion to your K. It sounds like the same thing until you watch the losing side follow the enemy K around, taking advantage of the winning side not being able to blow up his own K.
