I had a look at your graph, but I have no idea as to what you're saying it is proof of. To summarize it:

Apr/04: You joined RHP
May/04: You completed your provisional games with an established rating in the 900s.
Jul/04: You made it to just under 1200.
Jul/05: You broke 1250. Netting about a 60 point gain over that 1 year period.
Dec/05: You broke 13 800 points in half a year, I really have no idea what your point is. There's your graph, and?
It just shows he has found some sweet chess books. Right?

I wouldn't read too much into this. Some of us are better at "names" than others. Whilst its true a decent player should know his KID from his KGA, a French from a Caro Cann, a Ruy Lopez from a Guico Piano, a Vienna from a Scotch, can you honestly say you always know the difference between a 2 Knights, 3 Knights or 4 Knights Defence (Clue: Its [b]not the ...[text shortened]... with names. Maybe coupled with other things it points towards something but nothing more.
I just thought it interesting 😉

Chess books, unless he played some openings move for move, would not help him bounce from 1250 to 2000 in that length of time.

Playing move for move perfect in the openings using a book or DB or a combination of both is possible.

Using good reference materials rigorously in all you games until such time as you can make the moves blindfolded can add 150 - 200 to your rating if you are prone to opening blunders.

Apparantly the player who this thread is about also plays there, I just checked his profile and it says something like:

"Hi I'm Matt and I have almost "solved" the Nxf7 line in the traxler, something that even GM's couldnt do"

I can think of a lot of funny stuff to say about that , but I will leave it up to you guys 😉
Dutch Defence also plays here...

Interesting that you mention that. I don't know if he was an engine user or not cause I never played him, but I think it's a good idea to test players by playing them a game of 5 min blitz.

I have taken it upon myself to play blitz with most of the strong players in my clan. If they beat me then they deserve their rating. 🙂

2000 here may be different from 2000 OTB. With databases available, perhaps RHP players have studied openings less too. Although, it is usually the opposite in CC. However, you are probably right for OTB. I certainly don't know any player over 2000 who doesn't know the names and starting positions of the main openings at least for the first move he plays. For example, if 1. e4: the French, Caro, Ruy, Petroff, Scandinavian, Sicilian (Najdorf, Kan, Taimanov, Sveshnikov, Classical, (Acc.)Dragon, Scheveningen), and Pirc/Modern. Moreover, I know several 1500 players who seem to know at least the basics and names of many of these openings.

BTW: I don't know how good 5 min is as any sort of test. Some players are weak in blitz, especially if under 10 min. To be as good in blitz as in OTB, you have to practice it, and have a good deal of experience and knowledge about the openings you play. If you generally reason them out yourself, it is too slow. Of course, this applies to blitz players at the 1600+ level not really below.

just like testing people's marathon skills by running a 100m dash against them.

He wasn't. He was banned for 3 (c), not 3 (b).
Apparently he harrassed another user.
