Now that I am older I don't get to mate as often as when I was young.

a have never mated so i won't even bother to try these days... i just resign on move 1 and order another drink

You guys need to stop trying to mate with a knight. Mating with queens.. much easier.

There is a distinct lack of attractive and available queens in the world so I suggest you lower those standards =)

alright...let me try this again...I finally have some time to post in addition to playing my games...

Is it possible to win as white in the position below? I was finally able to force a draw, but I felt like there was a chance to win...

Edit: white to move...

I think this is a draw.

If white advances his h-pawn, black forces a draw easily by taking the newly promoted queen.

If white moves his king anywhere that does not protect g6, then black's king immediately takes g6 and can only hope to draw at best. White King can only move to f7 and still protect g6. Black's king can move to f5. The kings can dance back and forth. White cannot force the black king to where it does not threatent g6.

I overall agree; and I've also worked it out to an extent; I was just hoping I had missed something...

If white moves the h pawn, black would take the queen, white would take the rook, and black would take white's g pawn. If white did not take the rook but protected the g pawn, black could still force a draw and maybe even a win.

Another possibility is:

1. Kf7 Kf5
2. g7 Rxh7

black therefore pins the pawn and prevents white from promoting

3. ~ Rxg7
4. Kxg7 1/2-1/2

Again, please tell me if I am missing something...
