What is your strategy when someone is taking forever in making their move? I don't just mean in RHP, either. I'm talking about timed games on Yahoo! to games in a chess club to a relaxing game in the coffee shop (not that I like coffee x__X)...

It sort of goes like "C'mon move already!" "I'm thinking" "You said that 15 minutes ago!"

Fortunately I have come up with a solution to this, I go away and tell them that I'm making a sandwich implying that I'll be able to make it before they move...I don't think that helps them move any faster either...

I'd be interested to hear your methods of dealing with this...

And remember...I'm not complaining about actually "thinking"...I'm complaining about taking years on every move i.e. on Yahoo! Games I played someone who took three minutes to decide that he wanted to play 1...e5 in response to 1. e4...

you know, your opponent on Yahoo or ICC may be using a chessboard in front of him to make his/her moves. I've don't this before. I don't know if it's truly fair, but when you have the pieces in front of you while playing an internet game, it's easier to see potential threats and "try your moves out" before playing them! Actually, this doesn't sound fair at all --it sounds like "speed correspondence." So, I'm not so innocent myself. It does, however, make moving go a little slower at times.

I guess the answer is to use time control. I assume you want time to think (since you were not playing with time control before) and you don't want to loose on time (who does). So I would recommend playing 15 minute games with a 10 second increment. I usually expect a 30 move game which amounts to 20 minutes a side. I rarely feel hurried and I don't worry about loosing a won pawn endgame on time either.

On something like Yahoo I'd just sit and wait or surf the Net (assuming there's no time limit on). Over the board I'd just walk away from the board for a while, once I'm satisfied I've studied the position enough myself!

I play timed games. If I cannot handle the amount of time they want to think, I play with less time on the time control or I resign the game.

On RHP, that corresponds to the timeout/timebank. Here especially I can play 100 games! Why do I care if Mr. 56 takes three days to move?

I think your "hurry up and move!" and "I'm making a sandwich" comments just encourage people to take more time. Those kinds of comments are taken as power trips or dominance games by people deep down I think, and this makes them want to fight you unless they feel you are totally dominant to them somehow.

Hmm...maybe...but now I'm playing 3/0 games and not more than 15/0...so problem solved...
