Much as I love the music of Trane, Miles and the Duke I am not aware of any scientific proof that substantiates your claim.... moreover I prefer complete silence around me when playing, and to not play when I listen to their music....

My uncle is a jazz musician recently (as in a few weeks ago) inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame, and I admit there's significant musical prowess on display; however, what you're demonstrating is more of your affinity for jazz than anything else. I love classical music as a listener and performer, and I find it more conducive for concentration. I actually find jazz almost aggrivating at times.

To each their own, but don't discount other musical styles. There are many equally genius.

I don't know if it is proven to be true but I think that Jazz is the most fitting kind of music to listen to when you're playing some chess games. Hip Hop and Rock don't exactly set the tone in my opinion, I'm going to try it.

There was a study done in the 1960s by Cornell University of the effect of music on the work environment. Computer science students were tested. The task was to take a number, shift it two digits to the left, and then divide by 100.

The study found that their productivity was about the same whether they listened to music or not.

But there was a big difference. While everybody performed equally well, those who did not listen to music while they worked realized more quickly that the result would be the same as the starting number, eliminating the need to do the math. (For example, 123 becomes 12300, then after dividing by 100, it becomes 123.)

The conclusion was that music does not hinder the ability to perform a routine task, but it tends to inhibit the "aha!" moment of creativity, inspiration, intuition, or whatever was at play.
