Look at my games, its the first one on the finished games list,
a set game with him on a sicilian open game where he played the
game against Nicohuyboom, you can see that game on the first page
of jean's finished games. I questioned him why he didn't take the
rook on move 13 when he had the chance and he said, I'll set up
a set move game and play black, YOU take the rook. Man, in 5 more
moves I was cooked!
He BTW is a genuine IM, here is a link to his accomplishments,
quite a list, actually.

John Fed on chess.fm had lecture about this and why takign the rook was bad. But it's good that you saw Bh6 and moved your king as soon as you took the rook. At least you avoided that one trap.

Thats the one. I thought I could go for a BIT longer than that!
He PM'd me three recent games where they tried to take the rook,
got cooked. Nice lesson.

....Withhhh those accomplishments I'd like to know how he has 1 loss here.... Or better yet, how he even has 20 draws!

Funny thing is, if you saw the game I played with him, it was
studying the effect of taking a rook with bishop, theoretically
giving you an exchange up but in this case black comes in like
gangbusters. Go to Hebert's games and play over the one he just
lost, there are a couple of exchanges going on like that, on the
same day I did my try. I hope there wasn't a connection!
But heck, look at Weyerstrass, he has even more games and still
no losses. He is also an IM.
On Hebert's profile he talks about playing on a lot of other sites so
the games he has going here is just a piece of his action, so he may
not have the time to devote to games against strong players. He lost
to a 2187 rated player, someone he would normall stomp but like
the percentages say, you have trouble winning EVERY time. Even
Fischer couldn't do that.

I don't think he is the only IM playing here

What is really incredible is that he is playing about 20-30 games with people in the top twenty at the same time and making more moves than the top 10 make in a whole month in one week ! The man is the most humble man I have ever encountered period, let alone an IM who cares enough to share his vast knowledge with anyone who is willing to reach out for it. If we had players of the month or year, he would be my pick !!

He's an OTB IM (top rating just under 2500, I believe) but also a correspondence chess GM.

With the number of games he plays here, and his humility, he is a terrific asset to the site.

Ne4 best move according to Fritz. I guess, in general terms, the lesson is: be very leery of exchanging one of your few active pieces for an inactive one, especially when it opens lines to your king. I think most people (including me) would probably snap up the the tempting fat rook.

In his game with Nicohuyboom where I first saw the position, thats
exactly what he did. And I agree with the idea of a player of the month
idea and he would top that list. I did learn a bit when he told me about
it and he took the time to send me three games based on taking
the rook. Don't know any pro's who would go out of their way to help a
duffer like me.

I can't solve this mystery...

Why would a 2500 player play against 1500 player?

what could he posibbly gain? (and what could the "1500" gain?).
(assumption: maybe he needs an ego boost?).

any ideas??

Tournament game? You don't get to choose your opponents.

I'm sure ego was not a factor.
