Just re-read the original post. Pretty clear JH was HELPING Sonhouse. Not a matter of ego - just a very fine chess player helping a fellow chess player understand a position.

what could he posibbly gain? (and what could the "1500" gain?).
(assumption: maybe he needs an ego boost?).

any ideas??
That game happened as a result of a conversation I had with Jean.
If you read my first post, you would have seen I asked him about
a game he played where that position came up. He said 'my
curiosity was to my credit' or something like that and said he would
do a setup game, no points and he would take black, he had white
in his game. I take white and take the rook and he will show me
what happens. It only took 5 moves to show me! It was a nice
gesture on his part to show a bit to a duffer. There was no
competition here, just education.

Apologies to all - especially to Jean Hebert.

I didn't read Sonhouse's post very carefully ... and so I missed the point :-(.

Peace,

I had no idea that answering a fellow chessplayer's question would draw so much interest.
I would guess from the responses that it is not common for better players to help others.
I merely answered a question which "sonhouse" and I had discussed in messages, by the best means I thought he would understand. I set-up the Sic-Dragon position as it occurred in my game except that I had him capture the Rook "winning" the exchange early.

He couldn't grasp the severe developement problem he had as White vs Black's instant attack.
It only took 2-3 hours out of my day (as I was in the process of losing my first game here to a superb game by "sastorey"😉 to answer his questions fully, including some tough searching for a few games where the Rook was captured in actual games.
I can't answer every question so carefully, but was glad to have helped "sonhouse" with his thoughtful question.
The "game" we played was unrated naturally because of the piece set-up.
The starting position was definitely very much in Black's favour and there was never any doubt of the decision.
I hope there wasn't any mis-understanding as to the idea that it was completely a learning experience.
Many players ask for help; I hope many "better" players respond to those asking for help.
Thank you "sonhouse" for your time. I appreciated the help also. It made me feel good to help.

Don't know how common it is, but I don't think it's common enough.

I did suggest a couple of ways of encouraging such help in "site ideas", thread name "comments".

Obviously it is up to every individual to decide if and when they want to give their time to help others/explain positions, etc. But it would be a great shame if we had truly excellent players willing to help those at a lower level and this resource was under-used.

Looking at how a number of the 'top players' from the past were banned for 'engineering', maybe they didn't dare offer help, as it would have become obvious once they started posting about chess, rather than just playing lines given by a computer, that people would see their knowledge of the game did not match their grade...

Edit: Nice to see a 'real' top player here helping weaker players.

rook on move 13 when he had the chance and he said, I'll set up
a set move game and play black ...[text shortened]... plishments,
quite a list, actually.

Yeah, I saw the game and there is no way I would have seen that one coming... but then again I have problems thinking 2 moves ahead...

I take offense to the use of the word Engineering as an Engineer.

I suggest engine usage or chess programmer users.

Why?
Someone who uses an engine could be said to be engineering.
Doesn't mean all career Engineers are chess engine users.
