Originally posted by Jean HebertIt really would help a lot of people if games like these were made public. Here's a recent one of mine which I talked my opponent through. Okay, it's not pretty, but he needed help and hopefully learned something from it. In fact, it's pretty ugly, but that's the point of helping a learner. The in-game notes are not spectacular but I'm trying to help him think, while explaining my moves and reasons for positional play. I've asked his permission to post with personal notes edited out, which has been granted. It would be nice if this happened more often in this forum:
Maybe Russ should to consider do that in exchange for 50% from the top 20 players fee.
They would have to play 1-2 "learning game" each month.
Would be a nice thing to do.

Game 1681339
2WhiteI'm a traditional e4 man, Straight away, the knight move contests the centre, forcing a response from black.
2Blackget the impression a lot of people start like that, and i'm beginning to see why
3WhiteNo problems with your move. Perfectly standard. Now the Ruy Lopez bishop move. No immediate threats here. I can take your knight and then the pawn but there are reasons why that usually doesn't happen. Your move. (it's not deep)
4WhiteNot good. You're messing with your pawn structure on the side you would prefer to castle into. Once I've got ownership of the a2-g8 diagonal , you will not be able to castle that side. This will become one of my short-term goals. More normal is a6 or Nf6. You've also prevented the natural Nf6 developing move. My move d4 attacks the centre, looking for control - my Queen is in play, although I don't expect to move it soon.
4BlackYeah, i have a long way to go with this game. Think i need to read a few books. Just watching will help me
5WhiteIt's a very deep game. I take your knight, rather than retreat, partly to mess with your pawn structure and partly to keep my move advantage going.
6OK, now I castle my King into safety and develop my rook. You've got development problems - where does your knight and one bishop go? And how do you castle?
6Blackyeah, see what you mean, but doesn't castling so soon expose that side of the board if i can develope my pieces on that side?
7WhiteHow are you going to do that? Given that I can also move? All you've got is a bishop to g4. You could try a pawn rush, which I see you've started on ... but look to your King defences. Strip your pawns out and what does he have? My King's fine where he is, I'll worry about development, space and position.
8WhiteBecause it's not defended.
8BlackI see what you mean, i'm getting ripped apart.
9WhiteThere's a little trap in this move. Can you spot it?
9BlackNo lol, tbh i'm all over the shop in this game
10WhiteThen, bang. Watch your lines and diagonals.
10Blacklol very good
11WhiteWhen faced with a position like that rather play a developing, defensive move(if that makes sense) like Bd6. Now, I've still got you on the back foot.
11Blackyep, makes sense, the good thing is i know how far and how in depth i need to go to put up a good game, so appreciate you taking the time to play me.
12WhiteIt's a pleasure, particularly if I win 8-) Now I have choices. Just two but tell me what they are. Your knight move does not relieve the King pin.
12Blackthe obvious one was to bring your knight down to put pressure on my knight, so yu can take it with your queen. The other not a clue?
13WhiteToo many moves and I didn't want your pawn to take mine. You're not looking after your king. I regard my advanced pawn as expendable, because I cannot defend it. I've got quite a lot in exchange, though. But I've got to aggressively develop first.
14WhiteThat was a reasonable developing move which contains a threat. However, I've also got a pawn in my sights.
14Blacklol, your too nice.
15WhiteSuddenly I rather like that pawn - it's passed and I've still got the pin on your King. If I can I will push the pawn through. There's two ways to defend the bishop. This one's better because it maintains the pin.
15Blackcan't see what else i could do from there. May as well try to buy some time till the inevitable
16WhiteNormally moving a knight to the edge is not a good thing, but I want to mobilise my rook and have the d file open. Consider moving your King when you have the chance.
16BlackWell and truly boxed in at the mo, thanks for the knight tip, that makes sense
17WhiteI don't understand the rook move while leaving your bishop under attack. Pity I can't ask you to take the move back.
17Blackdon't worry, wasn't concentrating.
18I want to keep the pin while making more use of my Queen. I don't see any quick checkmate, BTW.
19WhiteMore pressure while the pin holds. It really limits your options.
