I used to play blitz chess in a local Oxford pub on Friday evenings and we had an informal challenge to see if we could get away with castling more than once in a game. Obviously this involved getting your king back to e1/e8 and was quite difficult to pull off, but it became easier as the evening progressed.
I just remember a game of Alekhine, where he tried to castle
his queen with the rook on a1 (short queens castle).
But the referee didn't allow it, he had to move with his queen only

no, it implies we are a gang... not that we are friendly with one another

Hello everyone. I'm Tyler, and I just started playing chess seriously. I'm 17, and I think I'm pretty intelligent.

So, if anyone could give me some quick advice, that would be wonderful πŸ™‚
Welcome to RHP. Hope you have a great stay and enjoy yourself. You will learn slowly but surely which RHP members to stay away from. Some you have probably discerned already!

You think? Aren't all good players intelligent? Or at least above average?

Intelligence has nothing to do with it. Chess is a game of logic, you don't have to be intelligent to be logical.

Having said that knowing the rules helps too πŸ™‚

I think that the vast majority of strong players are above average intelligence, but there are plenty of very clever people who never progress above patzer level, even though they put a lot of effort into their chess. There is certainly no simple correlation between intelligence and chess ability.

Even with Grandmasters you get some who are clearly very clever and some of about average intelligence. For example amongst British Grandmasters we have John Nunn (graduated from Oxford University aged 18) and Nigel Short (passed four O-levels).

Go buy Chessmaster, the software program. IMO it is the ultimate starting point for beginners.

I respectfully disagree.

Intelligence is a difficult thing to quantify. I even think IQ tests are flawed, but not meaningless. In my opinion the ability to use logic in order to solve problems is a vital component of one's intellect.

I think intelligence plays a crucial role in one's playing ability, though it's certainly not the only role.
