Originally posted by wormwood it's the world championship tournament. the current champion is included. how on earth could the winner not be regarded as the world champion?
Originally posted by ericmittens I don't like the idea of the world championship being decided by something other than a match. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.
It isn't. This is just to decide who will play Kramnik for the world title.
Originally posted by Chipotle I think Vishy is going to take this - he has been pretty fired up lately. Kramink right behind. Moro, Grishuk, Svidler are going to bring up the rear, with Leko and Gelfand going either way. Then, at critical moments in the 2nd half of the tournament, Danilov will sneak into the hall and the toilet flush ringer on his cell phone will cause Kramnik to flinch and misplace a piece, giving Vishy the critial 1/2 pt to win.
Looks as if you nailed that prediction. With three rounds to go, Anand will need to collapse entirely for anyone else to catch him. For example, Gelfand in 2nd place can tie Anand if he wins the last three and Anand draws his--not likely.
Originally posted by Korch I was wrong - if Kramnik wins he will play with Topalov.
So....does/did Kramnik have any real incentive to play well in this contest? Forgive me, I don't know all the "ins and outs" of these types of contests...but it would have seemed more meaningfull to have another playing instead of Kramnik.

...the winner of this tournament is the World Champion...
