Just a minor concept I came up with once. A "major promotion" is when a pawn makes it to the last rank and promotes to a piece.

A "minor promotion" occurs any time a pawn captures towards the center, thus becoming a more valuable pawn.

So, if a pawn captures towards the center and makes it to the 7th rank it becomes a... "Major - Minor"? 😏

Taking to the center is not always the best thing to do.

Perhaps a pawn's power is better decided by the rest of the board.

I've always thought there should be some special term for a pawn on the 7th rank...

For sure, a rook pawn that makes a capture is quite a "promoted" pawn since it can now capture on two squares instead of one.

I'm thinking about pawns that capture towards the four center squares or the secondary center squares or occupy one of those squares as being more empowered pawns.

I gave this a "thumbs up" earlier, but I have to say that it made me have to explain to my wife why I was laughing.

Could it be a Black Princess?

    Of course it could.

Yes a princess pawn is good (I'll use that sometime in the future.)

However, what about under promotion. A Serf Pawn if it becomes Knight,
a Cleric Pawn on the 7th if it promotes to a Bishop and a Rook.....an egg pawn!

In a world where gender neutrality has gained import, I propose that the name "Queen" contains a "double entendre" and therefore the pawn in question becomes: "The Beard". 🙂
