I am looking for a sharp defence against d4. I have tried KID but dont get very good results with it.

Is there any defnces/gambits you guys could recommend?

Center counter is a counter against 1.e4 not 1.d4.

That said both the benoni and benko have done well for me.

I like benoni, but if you play it against strong players you have to play it very well and attack soon or they just walk over you with a big k-side atk.

You could also try the dutch defence, I don't really know it and it may not be very sharp but it is quite decent I think 🙂

I thought there was an opening vs d4 for black also called center counter. Or maybe it was for white?
    Anyway, the rest apply

Yes OTB mainly. Havent had the chance to play it here (yet)

Then again I am usually against people alot higher graded than me. I hover round 1000 at the moment (1st ever chess grade though) and usually play vs 1300-1400's. Last tournament I was the lowest graded player (because I wanted to go into the higher section and get more experience) and still got 3/5!

Dude, semi-slav. One of the craziest variations in chess is the Botvinnik Semi-Slav. It runs:
    1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 e6 5. Bg5 dxc4 6. e4 b5 7. e5 h6 8. Bh4 g5 9. Nxg5 hxg5 10. Bxg5 Nbd7 11. exf6 Bb7 12. g3

And that is the beginning! Some lines go out to move 30, although I am sure you wouldn't need to know them unless you are some GM of some kind. Anyway, here is a really nuts game from the Botvinnik.

    [Event "Trzebinia 2002"]
    [White "Wojtaszek, R.."]
    [Black "Jedynak, R.."]
    [Result "1/2-1/2"]

    1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 e6 5. Bg5 dxc4 6. e4 b5 7. e5 h6 8. Bh4 g5 9. Nxg5 hxg5 10. Bxg5 Nbd7 11. exf6 Bb7 12. g3 Qb6 13. Bg2 c5 14. d5 O-O-O 15. O-O b4 16. Na4 Qb5 17. a3 exd5 18. axb4 d4!? 19. Bxb7+ Kxb7 20. Nc3!? dxc3 21. Qd5+ Kb6 22. Bf4 Rh5!! 23. Qxh5 cxb2 24. Rad1 cxb4 25. Bc7+ Kc6 26. Qxb5+ Kxb5 27. Bxd8 c3 28. Rxd7 c2 29. Rdd1 cxd1=Q?! 30. Rxd1 Kc4 31. Kf1 Kb3 32. Ke2 Ka2 33. Be7 Bh6 34. f4 b3 35. Bc5 b1=Q 36. Rxb1 Kxb1 37. Bxa7 Kc2 38. Bd4 Bf8 39. g4 Bb4 40. g5 Bc3 41. Bxc3 Kxc3 42. g6 b2 43. gxf7
    b1=Q 44. f8=Q Qe4+ 45. Kf2 Qxf4+ 1/2-1/2

Now is that sharp enough!? 🙂

Don't know if it's sharp! But...you could transpose into the French defence if you play e6 against d4.............

Gruenfeld defence is very sharp and it was often played by Kasparov and Fischer so you know that it is very good.

If I can get it off I prefer either the Black Knight's Tango or the Nimzo-Indian.
