Last night I visited the local chess club for the first time. I was struck by the difficulty in adjusting to playing over the board in 3D rather than viewing the position in 2D. on screen. I was slaughtered, but 'practice makes perfect', so I'll be there again.
Do others find the difference a little disconserting ?

Oh yeah!It took me 6 months to adjust to 2D view. Now,after 2 years of almost only online chess,I have trouble adjusting to 3D view 😞

Well, you can always stand on your chair and look top-down onto the board. Provided they have special pieces with an icon on top of it 😀

But honestly, it is indeed difficult. Especially the computer-3D. I can only play Chessmaster using a 2D board if I want to win.

I don't like 2D so much, and really have no idea why?
With most games at RHC I set them up on my board at home (in glorious 3D 🙂 )

[which is also why I'd like a game filter by game colour]

On a related but slightly OT note - do other people who read lots of chess books and articles find themselves playing better as Black (than White)? All books etc. always show game positions from White's POV and, typically, I find it easier to visualise White's perspective and hence neutralize White's plans earlier. Weird!

c.f. the oft-repeated RHP wishlist of "flip board", ever tried turning the book upside down? 😉

Back on topic, my better half has learnt chess on RHP: when confromted by a real chess board, she finds that more difficult to 'visualise' as it were.

I am more used to 3D (OTB) so find it reasonably difficult to concentrate on positions in 2d. I have 4 chess boards next to my computer when playing games so have to go through the rigmorole odf setting them up manually. When I have made really bad duff moves it is usually because I either have played alcohol assisted or I just took the move after analysing it on screen. I think its because the majority of games I play are real-life OTB. Hence the reason I don't like too many games going on RHP, it takes me ages to set up all positions on my boards.

It's for this reason that I do all my chess study with a real board. That and the fact it's a lot more fun moving nice wooden pieces around.

Note: If you're like me, and find it hard to get motivated to study chess sometimes, buy yourself a really good quality chess set. You'll find any excuse to use it.

I'm less likely to do something silly like walk into a knight fork if I set up a real chessboard.

I don't have problems with 3-D or 2-D itself, but noticed that my play depends to some degree on board and pieces design (both OTB & online). Weird:-)

I can't play on those 3d computer screens. Pieces and pawns hide behind each other. For some reason 3d over the board is fine. So I go from 2d computer to 3d over the board with no trouble since i do both all the time. I don't know why any real chess player would want 3d computer since it adds nothing to the game except a bad viewing angle and silly glasses if you're using the new chessmaster 10, which incidentally I hate. For some reason even the supplied opponents play weaker chess on 10 than 9 and the curser has an annoying flicker that i can't get rid of. I should have taken it back, but I can't be bothered.
