I've seen enough of this snobbery.
Resigning is a MOVE. It's a DECISION made by a chess player, or not made by the player.
When I'm playing a game and my opponent tells me that I should resign, I resign on the spot and vow never again to play somebody who claims the right to tell me how to play my side of the board. That's rude, and I don't play with people who insist on being rude.
I understand that the "real" complaint is only for "extreme" circumstances, but you know what? NEVER have I seen anybody define IN ADVANCE when "courtesy" requires that a person resign. Make it like a rule. I dare anybody to come up with a definition that can be applied in advance, rather than conveniently berating somebody for playing by the rules AFTER the fact.
You can reserve the right not to play people who don't decide their conduct of the game to your satisfiction. I reserve the right not to play snobbish crybabies.
On the one hand, novices are advised never to resign. This advice is given by some grandmasters. Then some next-to-novices try to rub their noses in it!
Those of you who whine about non-resigners, please state your reasons and your qualifications for complaining that when a novice follows this advice, he is being "rude." I dare you. And I await your answer.

Any idiot can see white has won and black SHOULD resign. What does black gain by dragging it out ? Did your gm answer that ?
If there was some counter play to be had or maybe even money resting on it, he might hope that Paultopia goes on a months holiday and he can claim the timeout and win the cash, but its not like that at all. Its just some twerp wasting other players time in a "fun" game.
Originally posted by GrayeyesofsorrowI'll comment on this now since the game is over. Paul and Grayeyes are correct. The game with Paul should have been over long ago with a resignation, but as stated by depressnell, no player is under any obligation to resign. Ever.

So it's a matter of sportsmanship in my opinion. Every position is different. Some are extreme, like Paul's recent game, but others can be tricky to judge. And as we all know if you ask 10 players to judge a chess position you'll probably get 10 different answers. That goes for all levels of chess. I know players who will fight right down to a lone king against an entire army simply because one time they managed to stalemate a similiar position. My personal opinion is that's not the right thing to do, but their opinion is the complete opposite. How does anyone convince them otherwise? Especially players that may be fairly new to the game?

51Blackyawn.....thanks for taking your time
52WhiteI consider it my mission to encourage the use of the "Resign" button whenever possible...

If this was an otb tournament, and you got caught discussing your game with other players (regardless of the fact that you might be 8 queens ahead with a mate in 1), you'd lose the game and possibly get disqualified.
Apart from being a breach of the rules, its downright rude.
People are free to play on as long as they like. Sure its a pain, but that's the rules of the game.
Originally posted by RedmikeCan you have 8 queens on the board and your opponent not already be in checkmate? But I digress.

In any case, according to the TOS:
You will not use chess software, chess computers or consult any third party to assist you in any game (unless expressly agreed prior to any game). Chess books and databases can be consulted during play
Since paul wasn't asking any third party to assist him, he's perfectly within the rules of this site to post this.
Paul wasn't discussing this game, but the gamesmanship of chess in general. Something his opponent, quite obviously, does not "get".
Originally posted by usmc7257Would it have been less rude to post this after the game was over? Is paul making him look any more stupid than his behaviour is?

Take it easy guys.
Well, Paul kinda was asking third parties for advice, tongue in cheek, and could get in trouble for it. Since he's playing the game of "who can be the more annoying prick" if he were my opponent I'd be tempted to beat him at his game by reporting him for asking on the forum:
"How many pawns to promote? And to what?"

I hereby ask everyone on this site for the following piece of advice in all my ongoing games:
Should I move within the time limit?
Well, that's it. I'm a cheater now...
Oh, by the way. Game 710567
