Nf3, it is the only one I use, although I will go d4 a little later if certain plays are made by black

2. Nf3 attacks e5 and protects the d4 square.

I don't think I've ever played this position! As black, I always play Sicilian against 1 e4, and as white, I'm not comfortable with 2. f4.

2... exf4 seems obvious (King's Gambit Accepted). Although Black has moved a pawn twice and given up a central pawn, black has limited white's response to 2 choices. I think black can catch up fairly easily.

If you think that black can catch up "fairly easy" then you have no clue what you are talking about. I agree that black can catch up but it is anything but easy...one tiny slip and black loses.

2...exf4 my obvious choice.

You are absolutely right--- I had no clue. I've done a little bit of research since and see what you are saying.

I think I was kind of harsh though..I just am a fervent advocate of 2.f4! 😳

sometimes my fingers are in a mean mood and type a little harshly 😞

maybe it was a full moon! Anyway I will join you on exf4 as I've no experience in this line but have grown some interest in it from reading about it in the forums. Someone once played f4 to my d6: 1.e4...d6, 2.f4 - in an OTB game and I was quite thrown by it and ending up losing.

1 edit

Being a more aggressive player I tend to counter with the Falkbeer Counter Gambit 2. ... d5. Other than that the Gambit should probably not be declined so black will probably play 2. ... eXf which is most common.

Edit. Sorry my original post forgot all about blacks second move and I jumped to move 3.

Correct me if I am wrong...but I think that fischer's line assumes that white will play Nf3 next move and doesn't account for Bc4...there is nothing wrong with it..its just not all that its cracked up to be.
