I'd just like to see people's opinions on computer use.
It is clear plenty of people are dead set against it, some seem in favour of letting people use assistance if others know. What's your opinion?
How many people think we can identify those who uses external help?
Who thinks it is futile even trying to identify those that do?
Personally I'm against anyone using computers but think it is futile trying to stop them, so I think we have to accept it.
Please let's not let this thread ruin the great playing and social atmosphere of RHP. I do think it is a topic that is often swept under the carpet though and I would like to see it brought out into the open.
No accusations please!
John.
I don't see the point in computer use on here. I believe it is primarily a site for humans to play against each either.
If both agree to let computers play though at a particular game (and the game is unrated), then I don't see a problem. Although I wouldn't want to play against someone who is using a computer. I will just play against my chessmaster if that is the case. 😀
I am against computer use...completely...
If both players decide to hold an unrated game (as to not screw around with the rating system here)...that's okay...
I also think that accusations will do no good as a grandmaster or strong master can think for a long time on a position and make a move that is VERY much like a chess engine...
dead against.thought the whole point of chess was to use ones mind not know how to press a button.I dont think however its possible to ban them since many GM's and strong players will make exactly the same moves as a computer/engine will suggest,so i guess ill have to get good enough to beat anyone/any machine regardless :-)
I've been away from chess for a very long time, and find the computer helps stretch my brain.
I don't use it to make moves for me, but I use it for analysing the board.
Hopefully, after a few good games, the effects will wear off and I can continue without it... like training wheels on a bycicle.
Sorry if this offends.
"I've been away from chess for a very long time, and find the computer helps stretch my brain."
<sarcasm>What a perfect world that would be, if we could get everyone to do the thinking FOR US to succeed! Hey, I don't wanna think, just plug in the chess engine and it does the work for me! I don't suck at chess after all! </sarcasm>

If your idea of learning to ride a bicycle is to slap training wheels on the instant you fall, how can you learn?
No pain, no gain...and you spelled bicycle wrong...o__O
I've thought about the use of computers over internet chess sites for a while and I can't escape the thought that it's a complete and utter waist of one's time to use a computer to make your moves.
Forget about whether or not it's "moral," "unfair," "cheating," or "against the rules."
Using a computer to make your moves against an opponent on sites like these is like Greg Brady feeding Peter Brady his monologue as he's standing on the lawn outside the window of the girl he's infatuated with. Am I right??!
best, Steely
I love to play against my Novag on my own, outside of online play, but feel that using it online to help me would be downright WRONG, as well as a crutch that I don't want need or want.
Man, I really want to saee how I myself stack up against other players on the web. The computer for help is POINTLESS. If the machine is doing all my thinking for me, where is the fun and challenge of a chess game? I become an inactive spectator rather than an involved player. If I want to be a spectator, I can go down to the club and just pull up a folding chair and watch the other guys play. Geeeese. What's the use? You don't become a better player by just watching. There is no improvement, no bettering of your chess abilities. You remain STAGNANT where you sit.
Who wants their chess to stagnate? Stagnant waters usually have one common characteristic: They stink!!!
I mean, man, i want my chesss to grow and get better!!
Imagine this scenario: It's the olympics, or some other highly competitive sporting event, and all the athletes are rady to test what they are made of, to really compete. but you look over to the sidelines, and their is this one competitor with an ANDROID who is going to compete in his place!! wouldn't that be DUMB? Wouldn't that be pointless?
And then imagine even further that this really becomes comonplace, and androids are easy to come by, and it comes to the point where athletes are arguing over whether it is right to use androids in competitve sports!
See the point? See how ridiculous it is?
Well, guess what? Chess is a sport! Not of the physical body, of course, but of the mind and mental abilities. If it would be ridiculous or wrong in one scenario, then it is wrong in the current one.
Nuff said.
If I wanted to play against a computer, I wouldn't have to log on here to do it.
Those who know right from wrong and have no problem realizing that they are human and won't ever be the world champion won't cheat with computers.
Those who don't care about right and wrong will cheat.
Others cheat just to get their rating up, because their chess rating is all they have to rely on to measure their own worth as a member of the human race. They know who they are, and they are pathetic.
I like to believe that most of us would rather lose honestly than win dishonestly.

Do you think it is worth rooting computer users out? Is it possible? I doubt it personally.
