what exactly is a smothered mate, may I ask?

And try to solve as many tactics problems as you can. That helps your game a lot!

Rxg8, Nf7 mate
Originally posted by Meneer DriesOk then. You don't have to know the names but you sure must recognize the threats and plan the attacks. The names are only good if your trying to communicate with someone and they are easy to memorize. If you can already more or less read the board than it's all ok.

A pretty lame one, but he told me later, that he didn't see it coming (should have resigned anyway).
Game 1290165
Originally posted by ChessJesterAs he wrote, his opponent resigned move before. End is forced, black has to capture queen with rook after which white mates while opponent king is completely burried by his own pieces. It is smothered mate!
The game onyx2006 posted wasn't exactly a smothered mate.
Smothered mate is where the enemy king is completley surrounded by his own pieces.
Originally posted by damjanrNot smothered, but pretty one!
