David Hayes - John Schweinsberg, Correspondence 1995. White began a safe conversion of positional advantage for material advantage with 1. Bf4?! Nc6 2. Nc7+ Ke7 3. Nxa8 Qxa8 and eventually won from this position.

What is the better course of action for white than what Hayes ended up doing?

i believe that once a line is discoveredethat will win, one mustn't stray from it...
he might end up thinking something else is better when it's not...
with Bf4, white is garunteed a win...
i would go with that.

Trust me, there is a better move than Bf4.

What about the following simple and forced win:
1.Nc7+ Qxc7 2.Bxf7+ Kxf7 3.Qd5+ Ke8 4.Qe6+ Be7 5.Qxe7#

1. Nc7+ Qxc7 (forced) 2. Bxf7+ Kxf7 (forced) 3. Qd5+ Ke8 (forced) 4. Qe6 with mate to follow.

Nice puzzle. Unusual that he didn't find the solution during a correspondence game, considering how forcing it is from the given position.

Hayes - Puckett, Huntsville 1999. Black plays the innocent looking 1... f4? and eventually wins a tough game. What should have been white's reply, and what should black have played instead of f4?

well it looks to me like 1...f4 2.d6! c6!(cxd6? c6! Bc8 c7 any Bg4 +-)
3.Bg4 Bxg4 4.hxg4 Ke6 =
