should lose fewer rating points than matees imo

As woof-woof says: a loss is a loss.
A plea deal!
Backgammon has its dice but then it also has an element of randomness.
Chess is bolder than that and resignation allows you to cut the torture short.
Chess is like Bond, escapes from certain doom crop up with amazing regulatory.
Ratings are pretty meaningless anyway so adding an additional element on the basis of boldness/beligerence/bloody mindedness/bravado could lead to some interesting results.
Obviously this would also mean that players who lose a "won" game would have to be penalised to a greater extent.
Please clarify the point at which a player should resign to avoid additional penalties.

Well no, because anyone who sees the mate coming could just resign and lose fewer points.

Originally posted by @ketchuploverI agree with the spirit of your post, but not the letter of it. I don't like it when people won't resign in a lost situation either. Look upon it as killing a cockroach, it's ever so much fun if you toy with them before step on them with biker boots. π

Resigners are sissies.
Tough guys don't surrender easy but try to make opponent's life as miserable as possible.

In addition, resigns might be considered as fixing, that is throwing the games.
