eh oh
I am for wooden ones. They make fantastic click when the piece lands on the square 🙂 I just don't get why the wood is so expensive 🙁 Maybe because it is all handmade.

Why? Well sir, the basic reason is:
YOUR CREDIT'S NO DAMN GOOD!!!!!!!
Your price range limits you to our wee-school beginner set of red and green unweighted plastic pieces. As soon as you've made your pathetic purchase, please leave; our store has an image to protect.

chessbaron.co.uk has sets that are just as high quality (if not better IMO) & are also cheaper.
Only drawback is that whilst quaffing g & t's down the country club you won't be able to say "good grief oh yes of course they're House of Staunton!" to your colleagues without it being a big fat lie.

Wohoo ! Nice ! Which wood is that ?

I think the dark pieces in the set are rosewood (which is darker than the golden rosewood), and the board is striped ebony and bird's eye maple.
The only thing I don't understand is this:
Here's the HOS Reykjavik II pic on the HOS web site:

And here's the HOS Reykjavik II pic on the Wholesale Chess web site:

So, are there really two different designs, or is one photo old? And if you order a set, which design will you get? In this particular case, I'm not sure what HOS is trying to do.
Edit - and I'd better not get any nasty comments from Harry Waxman! 😛

I don't have the board shown in the picture, but an comparable board of Spanish manufacture no longer available from any vendors that I frequent
The differences in the photos of the Reykjavik II sets are due to the one design being used with several different woods (and different prices)
See http://houseofstaunton.com/Store/product_name=The+Reykjavik+II+Series+Chess+Set+-+3.75+inch+King/exact_match=exact
As you can see, mine is neither the least nor most expensive variation.
Originally posted by Mad RookWholesale Chess has at least two different versions of the set listed at different prices, but they use one photo for both sets--the photo shows the ebonized black pieces, which cost less than the rosewood. I must say that I really like the looks of my rosewood pieces.
