I have a great challenge to any of the stronger (preferably 2000+ strength) players on the site, an interesting form of competition.

I propose that we each take a player between 1400-1600 and coach them until new year, trying to get their playing strength to about 1700-1800 in that time.
After this, the apprentices will play against each other in a special tournament and we will get to see how much improvement the coaching has made to their game, so in a way we would also be competing with each other but without actually playing over the board.

I believe this would be a good challenge between the strong players to see how well they understand the concepts of the game and how well they can put accross these understandings to somebody else.

It would also help to raise a new crop of good players, to hopefully continue their way up towards one day challenging for the top spots.

So, firstly, is there anybody who might be up for this? I have a potential candidate for coaching at the moment, but wanted to wait and see how many other players were up for this challenge before committing to the training myself.

I dont think that many strong players will have time for personal coaching.

I have messaged about 50 good players that I either have played against, or know to be active forum posters.
So far the response has been good, I have had two players already who were interested in coaching.

So, I think the next step would be for any other players interested in being a student for this competition to post their intrest in this topic and I will put you in touch with a coach.

This also helps me to keep track of who is coaching who, for the later stages of this competition when people play each other so that we can see how well the coaching went.

It doesnt have to be super intense coaching, many strong players will be able to improve a lower rated players game by simply demonstrating certain tactics and principals.

You would find also, that by setting problems that would be trivial to you, it gives you a load of games that you dont actually have to think about making the moves in and can do by instinct, thereby not consuming your time for more important games.

I'm back at work tomorrow after my 2 weeks off :'(

Therefore will barely have time to play my own moves never mind post in forums or coach anyone, therefore I must decline.
However it isn't a bad idea.

Tyrannosauruschex, I have actually coached before but it was to a Group of 10-12 year olds I was only 18 at the time and barely Rated at the 1700 level but I was given this coaching job to teach deep Thinking Tactics to these Kids and about Half understood the Other Half could not gasp what I was talking about but I'm into this idea I will help coach although my games as of late havent been my best because of me Working and having to keep my games up on RP, but set me up and I will try to help out.
Great Idea again

I like the idea and would be very happy to coach someone. I do a lot of that anyway and it is really nice when you can actually improve someones game. So bring it on!

I tried this once before and there will be some old threads on the matter. It was very time consuming and some of my pupils had very disappointing attitudes that disillusioned me a little.

I might be prepared to give it another go latter this year. I am off for the next 10 days so this will be my last post for a while.

I like the idea, but I do not have enough time (at least the next 2 months) to actively participate in this.

How do actually would coach somebody here? Ideally it would be OTB, but for that you need somebody around you who is RHP member and has a lower rating. Coaching in CC games is quite slow and I don't think that somebody significantly improves in a short time period, unless the coach and the student invest a lot of time and energy in that.

Do the pupils have to be rated between 1400 and 1600? 🙁

Seriously though, I'd be interested otherwise. RHP definitely has a great community for playing and coaching alike. I've been the pupil of several players, including people like kmac27, and now I'm starting to teach a few people myself.

Again, good idea.

I already do this to a certain degree in an informal way. A few of people regularly play me and we talk about the games in progress, discussing what I am doing and why and so on. On the face of it I should be supporting you. However, i am a teacher in real life and strongly object to education and learning being viewed as a competition sport. The current educational system in England shows just how disastrous "competetive education" can be. The introduction of league tables for schools has resulted in the students being regarded as nothing more than a means for government and schools to achieve targets and look good.

So that will be a no then.

Personally I wouldn't be prepared to put this much effort in unless I was teaching people face-to-face (which I do for several hours a week already).
