Bobby Fischer never blundered on move one, and he played this one quite a bit
my opponent and myself have agreed that the exchange is more or less an equal way to get out of book French
it doesn't hurt white, and it doesn't cripple black
it's a sound opening

It does lead to equality, however, I'd say that White shouldn't be aiming for equality, but for an advantage.
