Players who adopt the Latvian tend to specialise in it so one advantage they have is that they are well-versed in an opening that white may not know quite so well.

which doesn't really matter as much when it's correspondence chess and both players have access to databases.
It rules OTB though, same with the traxler gambit.

I think it still matters in correspondence because you can look up the book moves in a database but you won't really have a feel for the positions you are likely to face. A seasoned Latvian Gambit campaigner will find themselves in positions in which they feel comfortable - you can't tell me that there is no advantage to be gained in that!!

PS I played the Grob in a tourney once, won a piece after 6 moves; never tried it again though.

I see what your saying, but to me 'feel' is something you need in tennis and golf, not chess.
