David Norwood wrote an excellent book called "Winning With the Modern." For over a decade, he played 1...g6 almost exclusively. (I don't know if he plays anymore.) In the book, he points out that he saw so many of his fellow GM's get slaughtered from the Black side of the King's Indian that he was very careful to not transpose into it.
