is when you're playing a much weaker opponent, and you come up with a brilliant line that forces the mate out of a won position, even facing best play... but you know it's never going to happen, because your opponent isn't going to make aforesaid best play...

In which case you get a quicker even better win. 😀

Most of the time, these quicker wins don't look so nice. For example, in the well-known smothered mate sequence, if the losing king doesn't back in the corner, he allows mate in one. But of course, the smothered mate is just so much better.

Well, it's forced in that mate sooner and uglier results if it's not made! Uglier, for example, in that I don't get to sacrifice a rook (in pretty line 1, depending on what he does), or make a quiet move that bars him from covering all the mating squares (in pretty line 2).

And the stronger players are even worse.

When I did came up with a genius combination that involved a first sac of a pawn, then the bastard resigns so I cannot show off properly! Is that annoying or what...

Do what Alekhine did and when you come to publish the game just change the ending to the pretty finish you deserve

Mentioned before, but against a lower rated player you could have a sacrificial combination worked out, and the first move involves attack the queen to drive from the defense of a certain square. Instead of letting you pull off the awesome combination, they leave their queen en prise...

That game makes me want to become a subscriber again so I have more chances to fling lunatic attacks like that at people. :-)

Surely it's worse if your opponent is equal to or much better than you, and you don't get to finish them off in the most aesthetically pleasing way?

That is sad! Though I think there are compensations in that case -- a smothered mate is pretty pleasing, but a discovered double-check is also a nice coup de grace...
