It is possible for chess to demand too much knowledge, so that anyone who wishes to become an outstanding player must, I think, give to it as much time and study as he would to learning some noble science or performing well something or other of importance; and yet for all his pains when all is said and done all he knows is a game. Therefore as far as chess is concerned we reach what is a very rare conclusion: that mediocrity is more to be praised than excellence.

There are lots of levels of mediocrity, some of which have more merit than others.

Other games that presumably fall into this category: -
Football;
Tennis;
Golf;
Rugby.

All pointless pursuits .......

Until you know the point of life, nothing is pointless.

Wouldn't a sphere have an infinite number of points on it's surface?

if there were an "infinite" amount of points, there would be no points.

That is contradictive in itself.

Except for the monetary reward...and the hotties. And sometimes, you get to model underwear or sun glasses or they give you a car for being the MVP.

Rain, rain, so grey and miserable
Is not your life so short
& yet...
I remain lost in your wondrous dampness
Evaporate, condense, precipitate & collect
A world in debt to your shrinking icecaps will learn
Perhaps
