I once read one of those sayings you see like "a knight on the rim is dim"
It was "never retreat your knight in a fight"
As with all these alleged words of wisdom I think it depends on the circumstances
The only one I’ve ever heard is the first one, except with grim. It definitely helped me to push away from that move most of the time except when needed. Does anyone have any others?

"Knights before Bishops"
"Rooks belong behind passed pawns"
"In the early game a Queens place is beside the King"
I'm sure there's lots more

Thanks Venda, I appreciate you taking the time to list some of them. I tend too play the board more in the beginning, not aiming for a structure necessarily.
