Now now, this is not the place to argue about nonessential things.

The question is free and no one deserves to be called things because he has started a thread that one person only thinks to be a waste of time.

The thread is of course interesting. Even Sicilian Smaug thinks this because he is very anxous to respond to Slickhares thread.

The matter of rated games or unrated games is not obvious for new members. Why is there a possibility to play unrated games if it is only a waste of time? The question is justified.

My answer to slickhare is as followed: When you are ready to play rated games, don't hesitate to do so. You will have a rating that after some games will reflect your checkual skill and trend in the RedHotPawn community.

My answer to Sicilian Smaug is to be more friendly to newcommers.

The opinion is of course free. No one has to ask for permission to wrtie his opoinion. Trying to eliminate others their right to express his opinion is un unfriendly action. Because you and I have been longer time in this wonderful community of RHP than Slickhare has doesn't give either of us right to be unfriendly to him. You can be unfriendly to me, I can stand it, the only thing that happens is that you will be judged for your attitude, but we know you already. Slickhare might be scared off this site by hostilities. Don't do it. Don't go further.

slickhare: Sicilian Smaug has this attitude to everyone, not only for you. Play chess (rated games or not) and have fun! You are of course welcome to have your free opinion expressed whenever you want.

Enjoy and love the game fot it's beauty! Unrated games can be instructive to explore openings or interesting mid-/endgames.

because of the lack of a post count, or rank system based on post count here, i beg to differ. people don't gain anything from replying to this thread, so if it's so dumb then why would they?

that's all

*edit* also, how is this not chess related?

I am more prone to reply to the top few posts because I am too lazy to dig into the forum further and the setup of this forum isn't very complex.

I wouldn't have replied if I didn't think it was a good question. I know I have wrestled with the fear of loss and I still do. I don't want to lose one precious hard earned point.

a few years ago I wouldn't even play games anymore. I would just go over games and read books. I always felt I wasn't "ready" too.

The problem is you never get ready by not playing so it's a catch 22.

I don't get how this isn't about chess either. Whether or not to play Chess is completely about chess.

You play an unrated game if you are trying out an unusual opening for experimental purposes (like 1. h4) or if you are under taking a tutorial and seeking or giving help and advise or if you are using (by agreement) an engine to assist with certain aspects of the game.

In short you play unreated games to experiment and learn. All other games might as well be rated. You will gain as many extra rating points as you lose if your rating is accurate so don't be afraid - you will find your correct level soon enough then work on improving from there.

Stuff the ratings and just take the games as they come, no pressure that way and you're learning all the while. Let your opponent worry about his/her rating, it's called self-induced stress.😉

Also, keep in mind that higher rated players get beaten by lower rated players on occasion. Sometimes lower rated players produce very high quality moves.

When I play a 1300 or 1400 opponent, I never think of them as an easy win. As soon as I do that's the player who will throttle me.

Agreed. The most important step to improving beyond 1800 is not to assume anyone is a patzer. One slip can cost you 32 hard earnt rating points that will take 6-12 wins to get back (unless you beat a 2300 player of course).

The number of games I have lost because I have not taken my opponent seriously and thought I had an easy win beggar belief and usually because of an elementary (careless and unnecessary) blunder that had I just spent a few moments looking at I would have seen easily.

I have beaten 2200 and 2300 players from time to time but I have lost to plenty of 1500s and occasionally even get into trouble against 1300 & 1400 although usually there if I just hold my nerve I can claw it back from a piece down provided I can generate counterplay.
