I'm very surprised this has been very low profile - both here on RHP and other chess sites. Who do you reckon will win this?

It's not low profile at all,I knew about it and I'm usually the last to know these things 😉
I put my money on Kramnik. He will then beat Kapsparov or Kasimdzhanov, whoever wins that match, and become the new world champion 🙂

I have a feeling this will be very boring with lots of draws. The people who love draws will love this match and play over the "agreed to draw" games many times with great pleasure.

Who says draws have to be boring? 😀

Actually, I imagine there could be a lot of opening theory battles raging - much like Karpov-Korchnoi (French), Karpov-Kasparov (Nimzo-Indian) or Kasparov-Kramnik (Berlin).

Yea, I'm rooting for Leko for just that reason. He just can't be worse, draw-wise, than Vlad the Peaceful.

Actually, I do like to watch games that lead to a drawn game. You see a constant battle where each player tries to gain tempo.

Once one of the players to tend to get ahead in material/positioning then the game usually gets boring from that point as it is a clearcut win.

Obviously, during the game, they aren't trying to go for a draw, that would certainly be boring. 😀

I am looking forward to watching the games live.

Has there every been a book published: Great Draws in the History of Chess? Now there's a slot for some enterprising author to fill.

On the contrary they often do try to force a draw as Black. In kramnik-kasparov Brain Games championship which kramnik won, he drew as black a lot and simply won all white games.

If you play a match against one person (e.g. world championship) If you win most games as white and draw all as black then you win.

Oh yes, good point. No doubt they are all interesting games.

Well, the first game is under way.

Kramnik sacrificed his Queen for Rook, Bishop and a big passed pawn in a Petroff defence.

No playing for a draw here!

Leko is currently 200-1 to win on Betsson. Would have thought that the chance of Kramnik making a fingerfehler in time trouble was worth putting a quid on that 🙂

Looks like it will be a fantastic Kramnik win. The Q sac was a great idea.
