I wonder whether you accept the eyewitness accounts and testimonials that Joe Smith found some golden plates in New York State containing the raw text of what he later (allegedly) translated into the Book of Mormon. The witnesses are named as:

    Oliver Cowdery
    David Whitmer
    Martin Harris
    Christian Whitmer
    Jacob Whitmer
    Peter Whitmer, Jun.
    John Whitmer

I am relieved to read that. Some eyewitness accounts can be awfully flakey.

Amazing how many people are duped by that fairy tale.

You may be mistaken about the basis for the belief that the Earth is about 6,000 years old, at least asfaras as Protestants are concerned. Bishop James Ussher (1581 - 1656) published a monumental work, titled Annals, in which he calculated that the creation of the world was accomplished on 23d Oct 4004 BC. How he did it was by adding up the ages of the patriarchs listed in the OT (all those long lists of who begat whom) supplemented by various dates known from Persian and other sources, such as the reign of Nebuchadnezzar. For more, see:

    https://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/ussher.htm

    http://www.bethinking.org/is-there-a-creator/conflict-myths-bishop-ussher-and-the-date-of-creation

Bishop Ussher's work was not based on Egyptian myth, but historical sources available at that time. Of course, you can doubt that Adam lived 930 years, that Seth lived 912 years, Lamech 777, Methusela 969 and so on; Bishop Ussher accepted these numbers uncritically.

What? he actually believed each of those people lived many hundreds of years? Were they taking loads of vitamins, salads, allbran and exercise or what? Human biology cannot allow people to live much longer than 100 years. He clearly was an idiot.

Yes, the advanced ages of OT prophets was taken literally by many Christians until very recently.

If he had not accepted these long life spans then there would be even less than 6000 years of human history. There also seems to be very good scientific reasons why these early humans and animals lived so long.

No doubt the secret of their longevity was the total elimination of free radicals.

oh the free radical theory is far too simplistic. Their secret had to be something more complex than that. Probably involving some GM consisting of genetic enhancements from genes transferred from mole rats or something like that 😛

Sure, they can explain away the age of rocks and fossils, but then there is John McCain.

Clearly John throws all there theories into the crapper.

So making just those three dudes live 70 years instead of 700+ runs that 6000 years down to about 4,000. So the whole thing is bogus double. There are TREES with rings older than 4000 years and they can correlate tree rings from several trees to go back further than that, like 10,000 years just from tree ring data.
