It has been talked about a little, but shot down because it would most likely entice users to cheat more if there were cash involved.

I used to run a 'stock game' based on player ratings. We would 'purchase' a user name at a certain cost based on their rating, if the rating went up, you made 'money'. If the rating went down, you were losing 'money'.

It wasn't real cash, but it was fun for kicks. I had to stop because it was taking too much time, and I couldn't find anyone to automate the damn thing.

These days it's probably illegal in the USA anyway. We may think chess is fundamentally different from poker, but I bet the IRS will disagree.
