@Russ saidI would like to take a look at the new boards and sets (textures).
@MartinS
Without changing your settings, the new board *should* be almost indistinguishable from the old, if all goes well, so don't be concerned.
The existing set design choices remain, as will the board designs. The old textures will be replaced though (wood, marble).
So why the change? The existing code uses a virtually obsolete library and is tricky to maintain. ...[text shortened]... rward. (for example, a proper implementation of 960 has been on hold for so long because of this.).
Not that I (with my rating) can offer any stress testing (as I'm not a fan of 960 anyway), I'm just more curious about the changes. That, and I can appreciate the update. Sign me up.
@Suzianne
More eyeballs, and specifically, more computer/browser variations, the better.
Just to be clear, right now, I'm not adding new sets or boards, just improving low res existing boards. Also, no 960 either.
But, when you make iterative updates, occasionally you need to make some big changes for that to continue.
So, the aim is to swap over without disruption, if possible , then other changes can follow (such as 960, new boards, new sets) soon after.

@Russ saidIs the 960 the one where all the Chess pieces except the pawns are in different places on the board?

I play on another Site that has that!
Yes it is; I should have went to the link before asking. 🙂

@Very-Rusty saidI think that would be good for players on your level or higher but not for players like me. I like the board we have, plus we have variations of boards to look at, but I like classical chess, pieces in the right order. I hope 960 would be an option if we wanted to use it like tournaments. I like the way the chess boards are set up now. I can barely play normal chess.

I think 960 would of course be an option, and fun. I assume we would still play the standard chess for Chess challenges, just something a little different that even players which there are many stronger than myself would have fun with. I believe it would be good for people of all ratings.
Again this would be a fun addition as it is on other Chess Sites I play on, and I am doing terrible but it is still fun to play! I played it one day by mistake and found it was fun. I believe I was in the 800's playing it and have slowly worked my way up to the 1100's still not a 1200 player yet playing that way. It does take a lot of getting use to, at least for me. 😉

@Russ saidOK. I'm in.
In the first days of May, I will be releasing a new beta site which has fully replaced board code*.
Anywhere a board is displayed, other than in emails, it will be the new code. It is an evolution of the current live chess board code.
I would very much appreciate any curious folks to take a look and provide feedback and help test before this hits production. Obviously i ...[text shortened]... s even after full release - but only on the "Play Chess" page. Older browsers may complain for some.
I'm not exactly playing many games, but I'll give whatever feedback I can.
@Very-Rusty saidIt hoses all the opening books ever written.

I guess that makes it a level playing field.
@Suzianne saidI been playing it a while and still trying to get use to it, it does certainly wash out all book openings! I am having a hard job getting to 1200 rating!!!
