New board, new beta...

Site Ideas

1 edit

In the first days of May, I will be releasing a new beta site which has fully replaced board code*.

Anywhere a board is displayed, other than in emails, it will be the new code. It is an evolution of the current live chess board code.

I would very much appreciate any curious folks to take a look and provide feedback and help test before this hits production. Obviously it is the most sensitive bit of the whole UI here, hence the reason it was not touched last year when the general site UI was updated.

Let me know if you would like to help. Thanks in advance!

* I will be temporarily making the existing board available during final release to production as a fall back to those who may experience issues even after full release - but only on the "Play Chess" page. Older browsers may complain for some.

One change among many - promotion is now selected on the board itself, hopefully ending the common complaint of 'no underpromotion' due to the existing method being overlooked by many.

Sign me up. Will happily complain that it was the new board and not my terrible moves that lost the game.

Thank you. A few weeks away yet. Expect a DM nearer the time.

Once this is released, then a proper implementation of "freestyle"/960 is then possible too.

Are the members of the Beta testing Club automatically in?

Otherwise I volunteer

OK - I will admit my ignorance to most things technical

Could someone please explain to an old raper and pillager what this thread is about

PS - there was more pillaging than raping

One day,sometime in the future you will log on to your game and the board will look different.
Before this is imposed on us Russ has asked for volunteers to try it out,find any faults and send feedback which will hopefully minimise the barrage of complaints he'll get once the new board goes live.

What is wrong with the current board?

@MartinS

Without changing your settings, the new board *should* be almost indistinguishable from the old, if all goes well, so don't be concerned.

The existing set design choices remain, as will the board designs. The old textures will be replaced though (wood, marble).

So why the change? The existing code uses a virtually obsolete library and is tricky to maintain. This means it is difficult to add features which are needed to move forward. (for example, a proper implementation of 960 has been on hold for so long because of this.).

@Russ
Thank you for the explanation Russ I now understand.

Cheers
