This may have been mentioned somewhere before.....

I'm currently in India doing some field research at a university. Unfortuantely for me, the university network will not allow me to access certain sites, or parts of sites. (I think it has something to do with java, or other plug-ins that sites may run). I can access the forums of RHP, but not any of the games. I was wondering of there is any text-only or low-res version of RHP available to use without the need for any fancy plug-ins. This way I can move more regularly and not have to dash off to internet cafes every other day.

    Just a thought

RHP does not use any "external" technology like JAVA. But one core-part of this site is the wonderful JavaScript that is used in the playchesspages and others. It is absolutely neccesary to play here. And every browser should be able to let you use it - some browsers may let you trun it off. Check your browser and your settings and preferences.
The text-only version is a nice idea (Russ has made some xml ready to let you program your own interface), but in a textonly version how would you like to submit your moves? (yes, perhaps by sending "c2c4"...)

I wrote a chess program for my university final year project. I used a stringgrid to represent the chess board, and simply used a chess font for the piece. Technically speaking, this was a text only version, but obviously you would have to install the chess font.

sounds cool... (to make one's own chessengine)
two years ago I had the idea of making my own chessengine (which should just beat a patzer like me), and I serached the web for hints and help. And so I found this wonderful site. I never made this dream come true - but I still hope... 🙂
Russ pages about chessprogramming are very interesting and good. One day all this will help me... 😉

Have you tried the sister sites (chessatwork.com, timeforchess.com). Chessatwork has less graphics and is more "porn blocking and big brother watching" firewall friendly. There's were I play from work. They are just mirror images of this site with a slightly different interface.
