God knew the earth would be broken long before it was. It’s not something he “discovered” or was “surprised” by.

I agree. I am an optimist and it is an optimism that has plenty of empirical underpinning. The 30-year-old song is a snapshot of why one might feel pessimistic about the state of affairs in the world.

Wether it heals or doesn’t heal is surely irrelevant to the atheistic mindset. The only importance our planet has is attributed to it by our own perception of our own importance. We are surely nothing, a biological blip, a virus, a rare anomaly in the vast cold mostly empty cosmos.
