    There were many plates within the landmass would be my guess. Geology isn't my strong point.

    The plates are capable of going under and over each other at the edges. Thus the landmasses on top of them can come into contact.

    The plates are variable. They grow and reduce over time, and their boundaries and edges vary too.
    With one super continent you can imagine faults and weak spots throughout the continent - as we have today at many places. With teh constant pressure of convection currents cycling underneath, some of these weak spots break and the continent itself breaks apart - not neatly like a cut, but in bits and pieces over a very, very long time.
