I'm guessing NO and NO.
So why the venom in so many threads?

I also have always wondered why the venom also. If nothing else the rhp's threads have caused me to question what I believe and at least re-examine if nothing else. Also to plays devils advocate at times. Sometimes it's the (us) religious folks who look whacky.

i think it starts when one has no recourse to reason, our beliefs are challenged, if they are not built on reason, we become defensive and the discussion becomes emotionally charged.

Yes and yes. I have flitted between both atheism and religion. So sometimes when I enter a discussion, I am at pains to distinguish which is speaking -- whether 'Me the Catholic' or 'Me the atheist'. However, conversion is not really the aim of this forum. This forum should not be a space for proselytizing. I hope in the long run it turns out to be a place for interfaith and ecumenical dialogue in which people discover and learn about other religious views. I hope it is also a place where each individual refines and purifies his own faith. I think every religious person who writes on this forum, if they take time to read and respond to others, will report that their faith has changed in some small way at least.

For me its more about sharing info and ideas. Keeping an open mind and remembering some females and even muslims post here. That makes this a spirituality forum and not a christian or aethiest one.
Unfortunatley I haven't gotten as much out of the christian posters as I would've liked, then again christianity has been shown again and again to be a great many different things to a great many different christians. Oh well.
As for the venom it does seem to be part of life but is really unessasary for the most part.
Happy reading and posting y'all, and keep spreadin the lurv🙂

What happened to discussion?
Can't we learn about what others believe without subscribing to the belief itself?
Unfortunately, rudeness is just the tip of the iceberg. When one believes what ultimately they have chosen to believe beyond any shadow of doubt, you will not find discussion. You will, however, find all the elements that do not allow for rational discussion.

When one believes what ultimately they have chosen to believe beyond any shadow of doubt, you will not find discussion I disagree. I am a devote atheist; I cannot conceive of any argument changing my mind. I am however still very interested in religion and the beliefs of others. I find it quite fascinating! And I can still discuss others beliefs as well as my own.
